Logic & Magic: An Anthropologist’s Case for Trusting Your Untamed Intuition
For centuries, we have been taught to treat our minds and our hearts as opposites. From the time we are very young, a subtle conditioning takes place. We are told to be serious, to trust only what can be measured, and to ignore that quiet, persistent feeling in our gut. We are forced to make a false choice: between being smart and being intuitive. Between our achievements and our magic.
As a social anthropologist with a PhD, I spent twenty years operating almost entirely in the realm of logic. I sat in lecture halls, analysed data, and studied how human beings make meaning. I believed that the only reliable intelligence was the kind you could defend in a spreadsheet or a research paper. I was a sceptic, keeping a safe, scholarly distance from anything that couldn't be proven.
But while I was filling my head with data, something else was happening. The very cultures I was studying didn’t separate the analytical from the spiritual. Ancient civilisations didn’t see a divide between understanding the stars and feeling their wonder. They wove intellect and intuition together to navigate their world.
Later, my own journey led me to train as a certified shamanic healer and to walk the ancient lands of the Nile. Standing at the source of the river, I realised that my intellect had only been giving me half the picture.
The truth is, your mind and your magic are not enemies. They are two halves of the same brilliant system.
The Role of Logic
Your analytical mind is a spectacular tool. It gathers data, studies patterns, weighs risks, and organises your life. Honour the hard work, education, and critical thinking skills that got you where you are today. Logic keeps us grounded and safe.
The Role of Magic
Your magic is your untamed intuition. It is the physical sensation in your belly when something feels off, the sudden flash of inspiration, and the quiet inner knowing that speaks before your logical brain has time to edit it. It is your connection to a deeper, ancestral blueprint of resilience.
How to Weave Them Together:
To live a fully aligned life, we must stop cutting ourselves in half. We need to stop leaving our magic at the door to be taken seriously.
The next time you are facing a major decision, try a whole-self check-in:
Consult the Mind: Lay out the facts and analyse the pros and cons. Let your logic do its job.
Consult the Gut: Close your eyes, drop your awareness into your belly, and ask how the decision actually feels. Does it feel expansive or restrictive?
Integrate: If the data looks perfect but your gut is screaming "no," do not ignore it. Ask yourself: What is my intuition seeing that my logic hasn't caught up to yet?
The world doesn’t need more people running on just data and spreadsheets. It needs us whole. Trust your intellect, but never forget to use your magic to reshape your world.
